Hypertension for surrogates

Recommended Posts

Pregnancies following egg donation associated with more than 3-fold higher risk of hypertension and an even higher risk of pre-eclampsia. Further analysis showed a modest effect of patient age (OR 1.08) and no significant effect of previous pregnancy, previous IVF cycles or frozen embryo transfer.

This was a case-control study from seven IVF centres in France in which each singleton egg donation pregnancy recorded at 7-8 weeks between 2005 and 2011 was matched with two control routine IVF pregnancies.

I've seen warnings about increased risks for IVF pregnancies in general, but I always shrugged them off as the studies didn't address the underlying need for IVF.  What if the woman undergoing IVF was unhealthy before pregnancy?  But all gestational surrogates are carrying someone else's egg, so this study seems particularly relevant.

The doctor hypothesized that the increase in blood pressure was to compensate for the genetic differences to be able to improve the maternal-fetal exchange.
