Help! Lost insurance mid-pregnancy New insurance says it won't cover surrogacy pregnancy!

I need help. Anybody BTDT?

I'm mid-pregnancy and lost our family insurance. The new insurance that I can obtain says they have a surrogacy exclusion. My issue is...yes we can get a Cobra plan (mucho $$$) and the IP's will pay. But, I want insurance for when I am no longer pregnant. My family needs to have this in place. If I don't accept this policy now...I won't be able to enroll until an "open enrollment" period. Who knows when that would be.

Freaking out and could use answers.

What are the other options? Is Maternity Card worth it??? Are there insurance plans just for maternity that would cover an existing pregnancy and cover more than the Maternity Card would?

I think you can carry two policies right? So you could get the COBRA plan but also take the other plan. Your pregnancy would be covered by the COBRA and the other policy would be for after the baby.

Good Luck!

You can definitely carry 2 insurances so get the COBRA plan and let your IPs pay for it and then sign up for the other insurance for your family.

My group plan would not let me carry a individual plan at the same time. I do think you can have 2 indidvidual plans though, just not a group and a indidvidual. Hope you can get it worked out, Good luck!!

I would think you could do both since I'm sure the family plan would love for your individual plan to pay for most of the expenses!!

In many states, an individual policy will make you sign something that assures you will cancel your existing coverage.

However, I would think that if you get the new plan and continue the old plan with COBRA, that is actually two group plans and maybe they will let you do that.

I can certainly tell you that Maternity Card is NOT worth it though.

I had this same thing happen. My husband's company switched insurance at 5 months pregnant. Because I was in my 2nd trimester, I was able to maintain the old insurance (they HAVE to let a pregnant woman keep it) and the rest of the family switched to the new that his company provided to us. After delivery I was able to switch, without waiting for another open enrollment. There was NO cost at all, and my OB's insurance girl handled it all for me...I didn't have to do anything. I was pregnant with my surro twins at the time. Call your OB's office and they should be able to take care of it for you!

CAREFUL CAREFUL, I'm not sure that you can carry COBRA and something else!! You need to ask about that ASAP! If you can't...I would take the COBRA (the amount for only you to stay on COBRA shouldn't be too horrid) and then find out when the next open enrollment for your family's plan is. It is typically a one month period once per year. Let's hope that it falls soon after delivery so that you can easily transition. And maybe you can ask your IPs to cover say three months of COBRA after delivery and then you can save the last comp check you receive to cover any more remaining months until open enrollment. Not a perfect situation but better than delivering on maternity card or NOTHING and better than not having any option of coverage in the future.

Good luck!

Well, a little...well BIG update! Things have not gone well! My new insurance will not cover the pregnancy and now COBRA won't either! And just so everyone is aware of this tidbit...COBRA is just an extension of your last insurance. I did not know that. So...some to find out there was a surrogacy exclusion that the lawyer did not catch! That just may bite us in the but. Praying it does not. COBRA will not cover the pregnancy because of the exclusion. I thought COBRA covered just about anything...how wrong was I!

MICHMOM- You're contract will protect you from incurring any of the financial responsiblity if this were to occur to you while pregnant as a surro. I certainly never anticiapated this happening ever. Now my IP's will have to purchase a very expensive plan or pay out of packet. Not ideal, but at least we are halfway through the pregnancy.

Any prayers or positive thoughts would be much appreciated! I certainly don't want the old insurance to come back and fight us for the exclusion that was not anywhere in the paperwork we had. Ahhhh! This is stress i do not need!

why don't you just get another policy and have your IPs pay for that you shouldjn't havce a wait period since you were insured prior to the change make sure it doesn't have an exclusion. Then keep that until the open enrollement comes along.

good luck

I guess maybe it's the state you are in, but in CA your old insurance has to cover JUST YOU for the duration of the pregnancy. Please double check all this with your OB office's insurance person. I was very surprised when my OB's insurance guru told me that since I was halfway thru the pregnancy, it is the state law that my old insurance has to continue to cover me. It has a name, this law/coverage, but I cannot remember for the life of me what it is.
