Success rates by insemination method
We used the information we have for all reported conceptions in 2003 to analyze success rates per cycle attempt according to the method of insemination used. In other words, we compared the total number of conceptions resulting from each type of insemination to the total number of conception attempts for each type of insemination and calculated a percent success rate per cycle attempt. The success rate for vaginal insemination was 8.1% (equivalent to a 1 in 12 chance of conceiving). The success rate for IUI (intrauterine insemination) was 16.3% (equivalent to a 1 in 6 chance of conceiving). The success rate for doing both vaginal insemination and IUI in a single cycle attempt was 14.3%. The success rate for in vitro fertilization (IVF) was predictably high (42.4%), but the total number of IVF attempts was a small percentage of total conception attempts. The total overall success rate was 14.5%, which is equivalent to a 1 in 7 chance of conceiving per cycle attempt.

These statistics are in line with those commonly quoted within the fertility industry, and confirm our recommendation that recipients can expect to inseminate for four to eight cycle attempts before conceiving. The statistics also confirm clinical research findings that intrauterine insemination tends to be twice as successful as vaginal insemination.

Younger women usually have higher rates of success compared to women over age 35, but the average success rate for IUI ranges from 10-20% in one cycle. With IUI, as with other methods of artificial insemination, the success is dependent on the health of the sperm and the woman's body.
