Hello all! I am at the very beginning stages (VERY) of the search process for my GS, and found this site. Hoping this can be a great forum for questions and support. I am 29 YO and was diagnosed with heart failure at 24. To this day, even though I have gotten better and my heart has gotten stronger, it is still not strong enough to go through the risk of carrying myself. My husband and I (and the Grand-parents to be) are very ready for kids! I live in Atlanta, GA and just found an local agency that we will meet with the first week of February to get a better understanding of the process, the costs, what I need to go through, etc. I guess my first question for the forum is, has anyone had better experiences either way? Either through an Agency or am I better off finding my own surrogate and just using a lawyer? Any thoughts, opinions, support is much appreciated!
To answer the question about Agency vs Indy - I feel more comfortable with an agency. Especially since this is my first journey, there are a lot of things that can be overlooked in a surrogacy arrangement and the agency is there to guide you through every step. (To me) to go indy on a first journey would be very scary and surrogacy is not something you want to cut corners on. I am sure there are plenty of people out there who do go indy the first time, it just all depends on how much work you want to do, and if you do decide to then I would make sure you do TONS of research, but do that anyway. LOL
Thank you for the welcome and the advice. I figured as much! I definitely want to be as safe and secure about the process the first time around. No matter how much reading and research I do, I will never know as much as the agency. I know it is more expensive, but the end result is priceless. If I find my own GS can I still use the agency?
Hello and Welcome!! I have done 2 journies, the 1st one I was matched with a couple through the agency and everything was done for us. And the second time, I matched indy, and we found it was difficult for us, so my IPs decided to use the help of my former agency. It took alot of stress off of all of us! Yes it was an added expense, however, the director DID take $$ off of the agency fee because we matched indy. I don't know if all will. Or if they will even allow indy matching. I guess it depends on the agency. I know there are some out there that you can just hire for the matching process, and even just to facilitate through the rest of the process- like our did. But I can't speak for them all. But good luck to you in whatever you choose, and don't be afraid to ask any questions, everyone here is very knowledgable and very friendly and supportive!
Welcome! I also used a agency. I felt more comfortable my first time around. It was nice when things didn't end up "text book" and we had a few hiccups. Also remember if that agency doesn't feel right there are many more out there!
Hello and welcome! I also have used an agency each time. I just feel better not having to discuss the business details and financial aspects directly with my IPs. For me, I feel like that way we can have a much more relaxed relationship and focus on the more fun aspects of surrogacy. I admit, I could see doing it indy as well, and now I think I would be fine with that- but my first time I would not have been. Everyone is different, though! There are some women on here who prefer to be more in control and do the legwork themselves, so they prefer indy. It's all what feels right for you.
I'm so happy to find someone in Atlanta!!! There is one, only one in Loganville (so not really Atlanta but close enough!) called Family Acuity. I am going to see them later this month. Here is their website: http://familyacuity.com/
So you already did this once? Did you go through an agency? THis might be a good one for you to register with locally! Who knows, maybe we will get matched up!
That is so cool! I knew we had a few Attnys down here (I use one), but I had no idea we had an agency! Actually, I'm currently with an Agency in Boston. You can pretty much use an Agency anywhere, so don't feel pressure to use this agency if you don't LOVE them when you meet them since they are the only ones in Georgia. I am already matched with a couple, and my IPs are from overseas and use the agency in Boston. Just find a place that meshes well with you, has great reviews, etc. Good Luck and I can't wait to follow your journey :)/>
I look forward to reading about you on your journey
My partner and I are IFs. We decided to work with an agency, the thought of going Indy didn't even cross our minds.
We researched 6 different agencies for about 2 months and elected to go with one on the West Coast (we live in the mid west).
We also looked at different fertility clinics and egg donor agencies (the latter may not be applicable in your situation) :)/>
I'd be happy to share our info - and, I think for going through the first time with a surrogacy journey we are very very fortunate to have our agency. I don't know that we'd want to make this journey without the agency know-how.
If we decide to pursue a second round of surrogacy we may go Indy. :)/>
We looked into a lot of different agencies and decided to go indy, we have posted an ad here and on one other site. The main deciding factor for us was that the agency wasn't offering us anything we weren't comfortable doing ourselves, and for the price of an IVF cycle we figured we would rather do a little extra leg work, plus it kind of personalizes the experience for us a bit, getting to know someone better. But I also know IP's who liked knowing that the agency took care of all the screening, it's just what you are personally comfortable with.
My IPs are also in ATL. I'm an indy GS, and for my IPs and I this works out better. We like being able to communicate with each other without all the red tape. What clinic will you be using? We are with Georgia Reproductive Specialists and they are awesome!
